Large Coin Collection at December Estate Auction

Nov 22, 2019 | Coins, Live Auction, On Site Auction

Our December estate auction in Egg Harbor, NJ features a large coin collection with a fascinating array of coins, most of which are 19th and 20th century gold coins. Whether you buy gold coins for investment, for resale, or because you’re a collector, you know you’ve got something special. Here are just a few of the gold coins that will be in our auction:

1853 $20 US Assay Gold Coin

These territorial gold coins are like a trip into American history – they were minted a year before the opening of the San Francisco Mint in 1854. Because they predate the Mint opening, some collectors consider them to be semi-official issues of the US government. The “900 Thous” mark on the back indicates 90 percent gold content. The coin that you see here, which will be in our auction, has an NGC grading of MS 62.

Saint Gaudens $20 Gold Coin

Besides their obvious gold content value, the artistry on some coins is part of their appeal – sometimes, it’s a big part. Take, for instance, the Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful coins ever minted in the US. Back in his day, President Theodore Roosevelt wanted US coins to be more attractive, and he hired Augustus Saint Gaudens – the man this coin is named after – to create some designs. The value of this coin is a combination of its gold content and the fact that it’s highly collectible, and we’re thrilled to have a 1927 Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin in this auction.

1947 $50 Pesos Gold Coin

The word “magnificent” is often used in regard to this gold coin, with its 90 percent gold content and meaningful depictions. Winged Victory appears on the obverse carrying a laurel wreath and broken chains; behind her are two well-known Mexican volcanoes. The 1821 date commemorates Mexico’s independence. On the reverse is the Mexican Coat of Arms.

1887 Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coin (Queen Victoria Jubilee)

Issued by the Royal Mint to honor Queen Victoria’s 50th year as England’s queen, Jubilee Sovereigns were minted from 1887-1893. Queen Victoria’s jubilee celebration was one of the grandest such celebrations in England’s history, and this coin honors that occasion. This coin in our auction is from the first year the Jubilee Sovereigns were minted.

This is just a small sampling – we’ll have many more gold coins in this auction, including California Fractional Gold, US commemorative gold pieces, gold coins from Germany, Austria, Canada, Mexico, France and Russia. Other coins we’ll be auctioning include a 1911 Barber EXF, wheat pennies, V nickels, Franklin and Kennedy half dollars, and more.
